I think scruffleeck should remain just scrufflebeck,because thats like naming a dog that lost his legs “Stumps” though his original name was “buddy”.
I think Joe should give him the new name.After all, Joe bought Scrufflebeck.Well, actually Bernie bought it, but that is not the point.

I say he should keep his name. But if he doesn’t, then it should be Joe who renames him. Since it’s Joe’s dog/plant, not Nick’s.
Still go with Scrufflebeck.
I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but I do think that you want to let readers decide about your story a bit too much. Sure, choosing a name from time to time is a nice touch, but come on – a decision to make after almost every comic? I’m starting to find it amusing. Still – decent story, nonetheless.
If he get’s a new name, it should be something like Ridgebeck or something else that involves an dog breed name, because scruffle is an dog with an unlikely combination of parentage.

I believe that Scrufflebeck should remain Scrufflebeck, and if there is a change it should probably be something slight, like adding a letter or switching a letter or two around, something like that.
Having said that, the Doctor character is still not very likable. I agree with those who say that Joe should rename Scrufflebeck, or at least someone the audience likes more.
If Scruffle’s name changes at all, that is.

Keep the Scruffle, but change beck to bark, or bite, or something like that.
Scrufflebeak is perfectly good, but I also agree with the earlier suggestions of Powerpaw. The old Scrufflebeck was perfectly fine, though: it’s nice to have a cute animal mascot. Even if the animal is a plant and not an animal. Also, revive Joe already. We want our idiot protagonist back already!!
