Everybody see that live-action Disney Aladdin trailer? I knew they could never make it look as good as the animated original (case in point, Beauty and the Beast) but I think it looks so awful that not even morbid curiosity will make me pay for a ticket. I don’t think any living actor could portray Genie as masterfully as the late Robin Williams but Will Smith? Why? Don’t get me wrong, I love most of what Will Smith does – I grew up on his music, Fresh Prince, MIB, and Independence Day. Pursuit of Happyness proved to me that he’s a versatile and emotion-filled actor. Yes, Hancock was terrible and I never bothered with Hitch and his Youtube Rewind thing. But, overall, I think Will Smith is a cultural icon – likely why he was chosen to be Genie. But, Will Smith can only be Will Smith. I feel like in all his roles, he’s not playing a character, he’s playing himself in a new situation. Will Smith is pretending to be Genie and, from the small snippet we’ve seen, it painfully shows. Maybe it’s just me, but I really can’t see him in any fantasy role – he’s too modernly urban and (subjectively) cool. Close your eyes and imagine him playing Aragorn or even Leonidas or Xerxes – that level of cringe is what I experienced from that 1 minute trailer. Ugh.

I like how Joe has developed as a character. Well done.
this series is going great
The only thing remotely fantasy will smith has been apart of that i recommend is Bright, alas that movie was just a mostly modern setting with hardly any magic put in it :( i mean you see a damn DRAGON in the skies!?!
@Bruudwin – I agree, I thought it was more modern than fantasy and he definitely played a modern role. I wonder if they took a fantasy franchise and re-made it in a modern setting – like Lord of the Rings set in Washington, D.C and the Eye of Sauron being a surveillance satellite… oh wait he was already in Enemy of the State :D
Despite his methods, Simon has the kids’ best interest at heart. They should’ve put his trust first.
To be fair though, think about it like this. Will Smith may not be the true Genie in our hearts, but Robin Williams definitely would have wanted us to enjoy the new iteration of the film regardless of whether he was involved or not. <3
@KingBreakerMike – Very true :D I definitely have my nostalgia glasses on when nitpicking these remakes (especially the new Karate Kid, which really wasn’t all that bad!) but, you’re right, kids and parents will have something new to enjoy and even use to look back on the original!
This is the greatest web comic I’ve ever read. It’s harder to stop thinking about this comic than it is to fight a swarm of primal aspids in Hollow Knight. :D
When will the next part be up?
