I hope you’re ready, too! Apparently, it’s a hard game! :D (So hard, we had to make it easier, by popular demand!)
You can play it via Newgrounds.com’s Flash Portal here: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/569758. Like Joe, Bernie, Jess, and Harry said, feel free to slip us a few good scores, please ;)
@hush_lorentz and I are really proud of our first game and we learned a lot about making games on our own, from start to finish. Can’t wait for all the feedback! We also can’t wait to take everything we’ve learned and apply it all to our next game!
Sorry about the filler, but submitting the game and doing last-minute fixes has taken up all my scene-making time!
Enjoy The Pocalypse Defense and please tell your friends about it! Also, I want a The Pocalypse reader to be on the top of the High Scores list, so get to work :D (Someone already beat my score!)
Oh, and thanks for voting on what Bernie should do! Voting is still open in the forums, so please vote if you haven’t already! It’s a pretty close race :D
Please continue to vote on TopWebComics! :D Bug’s sketch is still the incentive! Thank you for voting everyday!
You can follow The Pocalypse on Facebook (check out our paper doll pictures! Send me your own pics, too!), Twitter and RSS, too!
Great!
WOOO! First comment!
This comic is pretty sick! keep it up
AHHHHH! *Runs off to play game*
Loading stucks on 0% for me and my friend. :<
Is anyone else having trouble loading the game? I can’t wait to play it!
I just get “loading”… and it doesn’t loads at all.
Tried with Firefox and Explorer.
Do I need to be registered at Newgrounds to play it? Or maybe it’s just too much traffic…
I had the same problem Drama. I decided to find another site with the game on it. Of course, Kongregate came up.
http://www.kongregate.com/games/GreenPixel/the-pocalypse-defense
There’s the URL. The game wouldn’t load at all until I just went there.
Oh dear Cthulhu! The game is so awesome! Also, I love that music. Great job!
…. Well, there’s goes my studying for the weekend!
Also, epic dancing by Joe to epic victory music!!
The dificulty curve should be a little better. Right now I’m praticaly unbeatale if I just keep clicking the far end of the screen. The double istols are the best weapon once you max the damage and get a decent reload time and magazine capacity.
The game works on NG now! And, yes, we also submitted to Kongregate! Thanks for the feedback! :D
Yay for the long awaited game! :D
Nay for the difficulty and the radomness of the waves. :/
Sometimes on wave 1 I do 2k+ some other times less than 300. O_o
There’s really too much things to upgrade and too few money fot that. maybe use spare parts for Harry and blood/tissue samples for the doc (based on the numbers of robots/mutants thing you kill and then have 3 different ressources), instead of money for everything? Or just put a “replay wave” button to get more money and more fun with the crew! :D
The reloading is really painfull. Can’t Joe use he’s famous super speed for that? :p (and why can’t he reload and walk at the same time? He don’t have thumbs or something?)
And laser… Really? Half a day (if not more) to reload and it can’t kill a single Zombie without upgrades? D’:
Harry habilities should be used with a keybord shortcut (1 to 4)because it’s way to long to go the bottom of the screen to fast heal Joe when an army of plants and robots are hammering the door like madmen. :P
Anyway, your comic is great (The greatest? Even more?) and I can’t wait to finally see the Machines for real! :D
Go Joe, Go! Make us dream! ;)
Ho sorry. BIG comment. I won’t do that again ever. :o
WOW, i love the webcomics, i only came here for the game, (thinking who could make this awesome game) until i saw the webcomic. It seemed really intresting although there were a few (sarcasm) curses, and i am 11, but i cant stop myslef from watching all this. I read all watched all the videos and played pocalypse defense a few times (again sarcasm) i hope i can see more!
still cant believe how i came across the game it came out.
Mr Joe most of the time everyone talks about the comic but if i get your say so can i ask a website to hack the game and put it on there site is so the site is http://www.arcadeprehacks.com/ plzz let me no your answer and the game was the best game ever!
Man, this is honestly the best Defense game I’ve ever played.
A few things I notice though…
Reloading halts when the mouse button is pressed down, and this could be why a lot of people think it takes ages to reload.
Doc’s Laser reloads far, faaaaar too slowly and deals too little damage to be of any real use, even fully upgraded.
Fully upgraded, the Rocket Launcher is laughably overpowered. Maybe reducing the reload speed and firing speed would solve this.
Harry’s last battery is bugged up. I click the button, I lose the creds, but I don’t get the upgrade.
Also, the game gets a little easy once you’ve got your groove, although that may just be me laying waste to everything with rockets before they get past the fire hydrant. XD
Still, these small niggles aside, this is a really fun game! I can’t wait to see how the next one turns out.
OH also, sorry for the double post, but I forgot to mention another thing about Harry’s bugged up battery upgrade. After trying to buy the best battery, harry’s max energy was zero.
Fixed by buying a different battery, but y’know.
Again, awesome game!
Nice game! Two things:
1. Anyone who’s having trouble, use the rocket launcher. Upgrade nothing but your credit tree, and the rocket launcher. I was able to beat the game easily when I did that.
2. There is a glitch: If you beat the game or die, and then start a new game, upon completion of wave 1, you will get credit for the monsters you killed in the last wave of the last game. Arckeiner, that’s why sometimes you were getting a large amount of money.
Hey there, me again *dodges brick*
Just going through survival, got to about 2 million points, rejoiced at being current lord of the score table, and resolved to lose the next wave to claim my spot.
And I can’t. I’ve upgraded Jess and Bernie to the point that they can easily fend off a wave by themselves, and I can’t lose. And thus i can’t put myself on the score table.
Any tips?
@willy: Thank’s, I had to sleep, but now…
LET’S PLAY!
The game is awesome. have been reading comic for ages and is first comment YEAHHHHH!!!!
(happy dance)
Two things – not sure if someone’s already mentioned them:
*The scoreboard at the end of each level telling you how many of each monster you killed doesn’t work. You get the credits but the counters all remain at zero.
*Scrolling to select weapons doesn’t work; I have to use the keys.
Other than that, it would be nice if future games allowed you to move away from the gate, especially since I started off building my melee stats which made it a bit annoying when I wanted to kill stuff at range. Plus the idea of charging headlong into the fracas in spite of Jess’ criess to come back and defend the gate is exactly something I could imagine Joe doing!
the game is way too hard, and ranged enemies do way too much damage than they are supposed to(they are the ones with minimum risk, after all). also, the upgrades are too expensive.
reduce the difficulty, and then it will be worth playing.
ok, it’s official: the game is too easy, because it’s imbalanced. the grenade launcher is too powerful, and there is a bug that gets you extra credits at the beginning of the game, allowing you to purchase and upgrade it. after that, you get easy kills, easy credits, and can upgrade jess and bernie so that you can not play the wave 40, have 1.5 million points, and you don’t even loose 1 hit point from the gate. i don’t think i will be able to submit the high score, because it looks like i’m untouchable. also, when you upgrade the robot’s energy to the highest, you end up with 0 energy. i don’t mind though, because i am immortal.
Thank you so much for all the feedback everyone! :D
I’ll share everything with @hush_lorentz and we’ll discuss the fixes/suggestions!
The game is awesome fun. The only bug I’ve found (besides the mentioned carry-over of a lost wave’s kill count to the first wave of a new game) is if you try to get Harry’s max Battery upgrade it resets the Battery upgrades to 0 and THEN sets Harry’s power to 0/0 until you buy a Battery upgrade. This seems to happen every time I’ve purchased it on Survival mode.
5/10
Graphic is nice, Idea is nice, good Enemies, interesting Elements with Harry and the different things but next to impossible.
Make the Quick Fix Cheaper. I Can’t Afford 2000 Credits if i just got 2000 but couldn’t held them better off. Make them reload Faster. It’s like hes running into the armory getting the ammo and coming back instead of just Reloading. And make the Reload-Upgrade more noticeable and add more Clipsize per Upgrade then just 1. Lock it’s senseless to pay 1500 Creds just for 1 more Shot.
Actually… It would be better to give us more Credits per Kill or make the Upgrades Cheaper but now it is really frustrating with these… oh and the Enemies are too Hard. The most are Coming to the Door without you cold do anything with that. And in the End even with Damage Upgrades the Fist is the best weapon i noticed the Game.
Oh and there are a couple of Bugs. Thirst you cant shot if there are to many Ranged Enemies at the Door. They Shoot at You, especially the Laser Tanks, and you are interrupted the whole Time without the Chance of doing anything.
Then If you are Game Over and start over again in the first Wave are additional given Creds for the Kills from the Game Over Wave.
So in the End… I Would really like this Game but it is just frustrating Hard. Not Challenging, it is frustrating…
If someone next time tests your Game and you fix it by their true Opinion, i think it will be a Masterpiece.
Not by me, Zaqaz, but someone else. Fixed few spelling mistakes. :D
(BUT IT THINK HES HALF RIGHT!)
I think sorry
Those complaining about difficulty can feel free to, in the words of the heavy weapons guy, “CRY SOME MORE!”
I think the problem is the majority of people aren’t upgrading intelligently. Get the Doc’s credit tree upgrades early on, so that you’ll have copious amounts of credits after each level later. Also, there is what seems to be a glitch in my opinion, that works in the player’s favor: It is possible to skip upgrades, for instance, buying the third level of an upgrade without the first two. Rather than pay for all of those upgrades, you only have to spend the cost of the highest upgrade.
Good work on the game, Joe. Now you need to make a comic explaining why those soldiers aren’t out there helping me. Also, is the game endless or is there a final wave to work towards?
Honestly, as far as difficulty goes, I’m on wave 64 right now on survival. And the only time I even bother firing is when it’s just vampires coming to the gate.
Credit Tree, then some gate life, then either get the launcher or the dual guns, get about 4 dots in each, then wait until you can fully upgrade Jessie and Bennie…. then you can just get cash until you fully upgrade everything.
The game is completely awesome though. Thank you, Joe.
You know, at first i thought that the fillers were nice and funny. But now i think it’s just a waste of time from the story! These happen way too often, but i understand that nobody’s perfect. I just want to see fewer in the future.
I don’t know what the ppl are thinking when they say this game is to hard.
you get the rocket launcher on wave 3. Upgrade nothing but your credit tree till wave 6, and then Upgrade rocket launcher. around wave 10 Upgrade Jess and Bernie.
But if you fully Upgrade Jess and Bernie you cant die.
I have gone from wave 30 to 46 with just them killing every thing.
just by them self, they can get a 35 chain.
Keep the feedback coming! :D Thanks!
@Joshua Owen Heath – Yes, I totally hear ya! I know that how you feel is how a lot of readers feel. I try my best to post a story scene every update, but sometimes life just won’t let it happen :D I also try to make fillers entertaining, but I know that they’re not nearly as captivating as story scenes. I’ll keep trying, though! Thanks for reading!
The game is way too imbalanced. There isn’t enough flexibility for players; if you want to do well you have to follow a strict upgrade path, discouraging or making it impossible for players to try different strategies. If the game is going to be like that then you might as well make a fully linear upgrade path and skip the allusions of player choice. Also the reload feature is broken, it pauses every time you click a mouse button. If that’s ‘by design’ thats a horrible choice and should be changed.
With the storyline of the webcomic, a follow-up game that would be great would be a sandbox style RPG, top down shooter (perhaps multiplayer) involving searching for food and other survivors, gathering parts for Harry, etc. That would fit in nicely with the theme of things.
hey guys, big fan of the comic, love the game!! it’s a fun idea with so much variety in opponents and your own settings, looks great!
I thought it was too hard at first though, till I read the thing about the rocket launcher and then it’s too easy.. I guess the progression is supposed to be gradually adding weapons to your arsenal? then the later weapons have to be more expensive I guess? and there’s a glitch where if you die in combat, and start playing again, you get the kills from your last combat (start with lots of money!) – and I guess it would be cool to be able to save progress after every combat, maybe at the cost of some credits? other than those minor things – AWESOME all through!! :)
oh and keyboard shortcuts for harry’s activities would ROCK
oh and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS AWESOME GAME FOR FREE ONLINE!!! :D YOU ROCK
Okay, after playing to wave 91 (at which point I just let it lose) I have this to say:
The game itself is just really fun. It just needs a few possible improvements, depending on what you want out of it.
First: I never was able to get the final Harry’s Battery upgrade. I had to settle for the second highest.
Second: The laser, in concept, was cool. But it was horrible impractical. I would recommend allowing it to reload without having to have it out and possibly increasing it’s damage. Ultimately, it still couldn’t outdamage the dual pistols or the launcher, despite its overall cost to max out.
Third: I would recommend either lowering the launcher’s blast radius or increasing its reload time. It overshadows every other gun without fail.
Fourth: I would also recommend increasing the firing rate and base clip of the dual pistols so that they could be a more viable alternative to the launcher.
Fifth: There also seems to be a bug where Joe will start walking in place after running out of ammo (only ever had it happen with the laser) even after I release the mouse. I had to fire again to cause it to begin the reload sequence.
Sixth: Any level below 72 or so you can sit through without ever healing, even in between missions, as long as you have Jess and Bernie maxed out and some upgrades on the gate defense, HP, and regeneration. Maxing all of those is easily obtainable well before you hit those waves. After that, you need to occasionally have Harry heal or heal using the Doc’s lab.
Fifth: I would recommend possible increasing creature movement speed with the waves. If this already happens, then I would recommend accelerating it a bit. Even at level 91, if I continued to fire the dual pistols or the launcher, in combination with Jess and Bernie firing (slow rockets and freeze rockets destroy the opposition) then the enemies were actually incapable of reaching me. At most, they’d get to the second lamp post or just afterward. Usually… they’d make it to the hydrant or in between the hydrant and the first lamp post.
Sixth: There seemed to be no use for getting more civilians after collecting the suit upgrades. If that’s all you want them for (and for Video Game Caring Potential), then that’s cool. That’s all that would make me fire on occasion, honestly…
Seventh: I never used fists after I got the launcher or dual pistols upgrades with just some damage. I never used the tornado punch except for entertaining myself. I never saw use in the shotgun, so I can’t tell you how awesome or not it is.
Eighth: The game really was fun and entertaining. Really good work, Joe.
IT was fun, but once you upgrade the rocket launcher’s damage and amo, it gets waaaaay too easy. I hd to stop upgrading and just spend money of bernie and jess to make it a bit more engaging. Also to give those tow some use xD
Really nice work there ^^
Some kind of endbosses would be nice on every 10th level, something big like the robot thing in the story.
And some shortcuts for Harry would be great, like 1-4 for his skills so you dont have to click on it every time ;)
Ok…. it looks like everyone else has covered the difficulty of the game, and all that business, but I just have one more thing I would like to see added to the game:
The ability to use the 1-4 keys to use Harry’s abilities. I feel like I always have to waste time I could be using to kill zombies whenever I move my mouse to that corner of the screen. It makes Harry’s abilities feel completely useless at the beginning of the game. Actually, I haven’t managed to make Harry feel useful enough to focus on him a lot yet… I feel the keyboard shortcuts could help.
hey for the game there needs to be a save
Man, that game is a good way to kill a shift at a call centre! Well done Joe, like the power up elements of the game. How is it that my best score only gets me a place at 349th?
recently i know how to comment your asome awesome really awesome and in chile after also was a earthquaque before but also your awesome
and the game is good for you, not? we have to se the positive not negative =D
